Straw
Due to its absorbent properties and comfort, straw makes an excellent bedding option for your pig. One of the downsides is it can get quite pricey since it must be changed out frequently to maintain a safe and clean environment. Straw acts as a multipurpose material, as pigs can chew on it, roll around on it, and play in it. If considering straw for your barn or outdoor shelter, you have a couple of options! Barley straw, wheat straw, and oat straw are the best types of straw to have for a pig bed.
Pine Shavings
If you’re looking to have bedding that provides a fresh smell for a certain amount of time, pine shavings are a great bedding to consider! They tend to not stick together as much as straw, which makes it more consistently comfortable for pigs to sleep on. Pine shavings can also be pretty easy to find! Pine shavings make a great option when straw isn’t as easy to come by.
Fleece-Lined Blankets
Although pet pigs can act similarly to dogs, they certainly require a heavier duty blanket. In fact, due to their rooting nature, a pile of blankets and a few pillows would probably be the best way to allow them to burrow into their bedding in the comfort of your home. Fleece blankets are difficult to tear, which makes them perfect for playful pigs.
Cushioned Pad
Although your pig may be more interested in tearing up a bed, there’s also a chance they’ll love the comfort of it! A cushioned pad can make a great bed for a pig, especially if you can make it durable enough to be tear-resistant. This may mean finding a good cover for the cushion or training your pig not to destroy it. Pigs do get bored and they may get curious, so it’s important to warm them up to their bed as quickly as possible.
